Last minuet trip to Colonia

I get a little too comfortable in Buenos Aires and forget to get my passport and import visa renewed. It’s been 90 days since I crossed the border in Tierra del Fuego and I leave for Uruguay in a few days. If I show up at the border with an expired passport and import visa the bike will be confiscated. I’m not convinced I can work some border magic so I opt for a day trip across the Rio de la Plata to Colonia, Uruguay to freshen my passport stamp, but not before paying a $300 peso fine.

Colonia has a colorful colonial history whereby control of the city alternated a number of times between Spain and Portugal and later Brasil before becoming a permanent fixture of Uruguay. The town is a confluence of Portugeuse and Spanish influences and is a great place to hang out for the day. I get my first taste of Uruguayan beer here and look forward to coming back on the bike.

I catch the boat back to Buenos Aires and get the import visa renewed downtown the following day. Now that I am legal again I will head north for the Rio Uruguay and the border.
