{"id":635,"date":"2010-11-24T18:12:44","date_gmt":"2010-11-25T01:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ichasehorizons.com\/?p=635"},"modified":"2014-09-08T09:45:55","modified_gmt":"2014-09-08T16:45:55","slug":"where-it-all-began","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ichasehorizons.com\/?p=635","title":{"rendered":"Where it all began"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In spite of getting in to Celendin late I opt to keep rolling the following morning and point the bike toward <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cajamarca\">Cajamarca (Caja)<\/a>. I\u00b4m in awe of the beauty of the countryside and mountain peaks I missed in the darkness of the previous evening\u00b4s ride. The road south is similar to the road I took into the city only now it\u00b4s alive with local farming traffic delivering the day\u00b4s crop. Judging by the number of pack mules I see loaded with milk canisters I assume there are dairy farms near by.<\/p>\n<p>A couple hours out of Celendin the road turns into the nicest pavement I&#8217;ve seen since entering Peru. With perfect cambers and big sweepers the remaining distance down to Caja flies by. Cajamarca is famous for its dairy production and since I\u00b4m a big fan of wheel cheese I waste no time sampling the local offerings. Caja culture predates the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chavin_culture\">Chavin<\/a> and the city is also known for the Battle of Cajamarca where the Incan Empire came to an end. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/1141458094_aCBw4-L.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/1105081112_oWNzA-XL.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/1105083677_HdaVJ-XL.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/photos\/1105085629_6oaj7-XL.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Caja is an appealing city and I could have easily stayed longer but the hostal where I&#8217;m staying is disruptive to my sleep so I press on to the coastal town of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huanchaco\">Huanchaco<\/a> where I will rest up for a few days before riding the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ca%C3%B1%C3%B3n_del_Pato\">Canon del Pato.<\/a> Rather than stay on the main road I take a mountain pass that literally climbs out of the pueblo of Chilete.
