Rain, rain, go away

It’s raining most days now as I ride further south so I try to schedule my activities around the certain afternoon showers. The next segment of my trek takes me from the highlands of Oaxaca to the highlands of San Cristobal. The ~400 mile stretch of road connecting the cities of Oaxaca and San Cris are more of the riding nirvana I’ve come to expect from the Sierra Madres. I dipped down briefly to ~1,000 feet in elevation and quickly ascended again as I entered the state of the Chiapas. San Cristobal is another in a long series of historic colonial cities that have dotted my travels through the Sierra Madres. The confluence of elevation, cool temps, local culture, and abundance of European tourists are for me an experience reminiscent of Manali, India. I spent some time in the surrounding mountain communities, notably Chamula, with friends and spent the obligatory time watching futbol. As my time in Mexico approaches an end I have a difficult time recalling which state I enjoyed the most. Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and the Chiapas are special to me for various reasons. It’s with some melancholy I walk the calles of San Cristobal as I know the Guatemala border is on the horizon.

Points of Interest: San Cristobal, Chamula

Note: I overnighted in Palenque while in San Cristobal and will devote a separate post to this trip.
